Where DIY goes wrong: extracting a stake without releasing the adjacent stones risks chipping the border course, and recompacting the base without a plate compactor and moisture control leaves a soft spot that fails in six months. The polymer edging must be set at exact grade; 1/8 inch high and the mower hits it, 1/8 inch low and water ponds.
