Signs Your Toto Fence Installation Is Failing

• Posts lean at the base, especially after rain. • Rails pull out of the post pockets. Toto’s routed pocket design relies on a friction fit with a hidden spline. After five to seven years of thermal cycling, the vinyl relaxes and the spline loses grip. The rail does not fall out, but it slides six inches when you push it.
• Gate sags and the latch misses the strike. The TGL-200 hinge bushing wears oval, or the aluminum gate frame twists if it was built without a diagonal truss rod. Long Beach’s afternoon sun heats the frame enough to make this worse on south-facing gates.
• Hardware shows orange bloom or white corrosion. Standard zinc-plated hardware from the original install cannot handle the salt load within a mile of the coast. We replace with 316 stainless or powder-coated aluminum, depending on the exposure.
• Post caps crack or blow off in wind. The Toto snap-fit cap becomes brittle after UV exposure. Once the cap is gone, water enters the hollow post, accelerates steel insert corrosion, and the failure cascades.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no high-tension danger in fence work like there is with garage door springs, but there is a measurement trap. Toto’s routed post requires a specific rail length to seat properly in the pocket. Cut an eighth inch short and the spline will not engage. Cut an eighth inch long and you stress the post wall. We carry the Toto rail stock in 16-foot lengths and cut on site with a miter saw set to the actual pocket depth, not the nominal.

What you can check yourself: pop the post caps and look down the post with a flashlight. If you see standing water or rust flakes, the steel insert is failing. If the rail slides in the pocket, the spline is gone. Those two checks tell you whether you are looking at a post replacement or a full section rebuild.

What goes wrong in DIY: mixing concrete in the hole without a footing form, which creates a mushroom that heaves in wet soil. Not checking for sprinkler lines before augering, which we have seen twice in Long Beach’s older Belmont Heights lots.
