DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check for the symptoms above and photograph the board stamps or liner markings for identification. What goes wrong in DIY: cement board is heavy, brittle, and generates silica dust that standard masks do not filter; shower pan liner welding requires a heat gun and seam roller technique that takes practice to master; and flood testing - filling the pan to the curb for 24 hours - is the only way to verify watertightness, yet most DIYers skip it or do not know the 1-inch-above-drain minimum.

We do not recommend removing tile or backer board over a second-story subfloor without verifying joist spacing and deflection ratings first.
