Signs Your Belgard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Individual pavers rock or sink when stepped on. This usually means the bedding sand layer has washed out or the base compacted unevenly. In Long Beach, the clay-heavy soil near the Los Angeles River corridor settles more aggressively than the sandier substrate closer to the coast, so base prep standards vary block by block.
• Weeds growing through joints despite previous sealing. Polymeric sand degrades faster in full sun exposure, which is most of Long Beach from April through October. Once the binder breaks down, organic material fills the gap and root systems lift adjacent pavers.

An owner can safely check a few things. Lift a loose paver and photograph the edge stamp, measure the joint width (typically 1/16 to 1/8 inch for Belgard), and verify whether water drains or pools. Do not attempt to recompact the base yourself. A plate compactor on an uneven screed layer will shatter pavers or create a wavy surface that traps more water. The bedding sand must be screeded to exact thickness, usually 3/4 to 1 inch, and recompacted in lifts.
