Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

Barrette driveway and paver systems in Long Beach typically run $7,000-$18,000 for a full paver installation and $5,000-$14,000 for a driveway replacement, with most Barrette-compatible repairs and part swaps quoted same-day once we identify your series. We stock common Barrette paver base panels, edge restraints, and permeable jointing materials on our Long Beach trucks, and we carry the full spec sheets for Barrette’s residential paver lines going back to 2012. Most homeowners realize something’s wrong when settling creates visible dips after winter rains, or when edge restraints pull away from the bedding course and pavers start spreading toward the street.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette divides its hardscape products into distinct series, and matching the right component means reading the stamp on the paver itself or the date code on the edge restraint profile. The Barrette Architectural series, common in Long Beach installations from 2015-2020, uses a 60mm paver thickness with a proprietary interlock geometry that does not match the newer Barrette Pro series 80mm profile. We also see the Barrette Permeable line in older Belmont Shore courtyard jobs, where the 12mm aggregate bedding specification differs from standard ICPI base prep.

To identify your part, look for the Barrette manufacturing date stamp on the paver edge - a four-digit code where the first two digits indicate the week and the last two the year. Edge restraints carry a separate profile number embossed on the interior face. OEM Barrette parts maintain exact interlock tolerances, but we also source aftermarket equivalents from Techo-Bloc and Belgard where the spec overlaps and the price difference matters. The gotcha: Barrette’s 2017-2019 Architectural series used a slightly narrower chamfer that aftermarket pavers sometimes miss by 2mm, which shows up as a hairline joint gap after three thermal cycles. We measure twice, write it down, then build it - and that includes verifying chamfer specs before we quote.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Sunken or dipped sections after rain. The bedding course beneath your Barrette pavers has washed out or compacted unevenly, usually because the geotextile separator failed or the base was insufficiently compacted in lifts during original install. In Long Beach, our clay-heavy soil near the port area holds water longer than the sandy loam up toward Signal Hill, so settlement patterns differ by neighborhood.
  • Pavers spreading outward at driveway edges. The edge restraint - plastic, aluminum, or concrete - has lost anchoring strength. Barrette’s spike-in plastic restraints degrade faster in UV-exposed south-facing driveways; we see this most often on east Long Beach installs with afternoon sun exposure.
  • White efflorescence haze that returns after cleaning. Calcium hydroxide is migrating through the paver body from the cementitious base below. This is cosmetic but indicates moisture is moving through the system instead of draining, which points to a failed or missing permeable jointing material in Barrette permeable installations.
  • Chipped or spalled paver corners, especially near the garage transition. The paver’s compressive strength is being exceeded by point loads - often from steering while stationary, but sometimes from a base that’s too thin for the traffic load. Barrette’s 60mm residential pavers are rated for passenger vehicles only; repeated delivery truck or RV loading causes this failure mode.
  • Weeds growing through joints despite polymeric sand. The jointing material has degraded or was never fully set. Barrette installations from 2012-2016 often used standard sand that washes out within five years in Long Beach’s winter rain pattern, leaving voids for root intrusion.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Long Beach Price Range What’s Included
Paver driveway replacement (Barrette or compatible) $5,000-$14,000 Removal, base regrade and compaction in 6-inch lifts, new bedding course, paver install, polymeric sand jointing, edge restraint
Partial repair / section replacement $1,200-$4,500 Excavation to stable base, matching paver sourcing, reinstall, jointing
Edge restraint replacement only $400-$1,100 Remove failed restraint, recompact base edge, install new anchored restraint, reset displaced pavers
Bedding course / base stabilization $800-$2,200 Lift affected pavers, add and compact new aggregate base, reinstall with new jointing

The range depends on three factors: how much of the base has failed, whether your Barrette paver color is still in production, and access for our compaction equipment. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, you get a flat written price before anyone picks up a tool - no call-for-a-quote, no “we’ll see when we get there.” Every paver job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise and a documented photo record of the substrate condition before and after.

There’s honest work a homeowner can do, and there’s work that wastes money. Checking for loose edge restraints by hand, clearing drainage channels, or spot-appending polymeric sand to stable joints - these are reasonable weekend tasks. Where DIY goes wrong is in the base: lifting pavers without compacting the underlying aggregate in lifts, or guessing at the bedding course thickness, creates a repair that fails again in 18 months. We’ve fixed three Long Beach homeowner attempts this year alone, each one costing more than our original quote would have because the second repair requires removing the first attempt plus the original failure.

Barrette paver systems are not high-tension dangerous like garage door springs, but the excavation and compaction work is physically demanding and unforgiving of shortcuts.
