CGI Driveway & Pavers: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CGI-compatible driveway pavers and retaining-wall systems in Long Beach, with typical paver driveway replacement running $7,000-$18,000 and concrete driveway installation at $4,500-$12,000 depending on square footage and base prep. Most CGI paver failures we see in Long Beach trace back to joint-sand washout or edge-restraint failure after heavy rain, especially in low-lying neighborhoods near Alamitos Bay where the water table sits high. Homeowners usually notice the problem first as shifting pavers, a wobbly border course, or weeds pushing through gaps that used to be tight.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI, or Concrete Grid International, produces interlocking concrete pavers in several series common across Southern California: the Classic Cobble, Roman Paver, Holland Stone, and permeable Eco-Stone lines. The part you need depends on which series was originally installed, and the difference matters because edge-restraint profiles, joint widths, and base-spec requirements vary by line. Classic Cobble, for instance, uses a 60mm thickness with a beveled edge that seats differently into PVC edge restraints than the 80mm Eco-Stone.

To identify your CGI series, look for the manufacturing stamp on the paver underside, typically a raised “CGI” with a date code and series abbreviation. If pavers are too weathered to read, measure thickness with a tape measure and note the edge profile, square or beveled. We carry OEM-compatible edge restraints, joint sand stabilized with polymeric additive, and replacement pavers color-matched to CGI’s Long Beach-area production runs from the 2010s forward. Aftermarket equivalents exist for some lines, but we default to CGI-matched stock because color drift between production lots is real, and a repair that reads as two different grays six months later is a callback we do not want.

Signs Your CGI Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your CGI Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Pavers rock or tilt underfoot. This usually means the bedding sand layer has washed out or compacted unevenly, often from poor initial screeding or water intrusion through failed joint sand. In Long Beach, the freeze-thaw cycle is minimal, but the clay-heavy soils in parts of Bixby Knolls expand and contract enough to break the bedding plane.
  • Weeds or moss growing between joints. Joint sand has eroded below the paver chamfer, opening a gap that collects organic matter. The underlying cause is either no polymeric stabilization originally or a sealant failure that let water carry sand away.
  • Edge pavers pulling away from the border. The PVC or aluminum edge restraint has cracked, rotted, or pulled its spikes. This is the most common CGI failure we see near the coast, where salt air degrades lower-grade edge restraints in five to seven years.
  • Standing water after light rain. The permeable base is clogged, or the original pitch was insufficient. For CGI Eco-Stone installations, this can mean the aggregate voids are packed with silt, defeating the permeable design.
  • Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. De-icing salt or magnesium chloride attacks the concrete paste, especially on CGI pavers from pre-2015 production that used less supplementary cementitious material. Long Beach rarely freezes hard, but homeowners who apply ice melt anyway see this damage accelerate.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is how CGI paver and driveway work prices out in Long Beach:

Paver driveway installation (new) $7,000 - $18,000
Concrete driveway installation $4,500 - $12,000
Driveway replacement (remove and reinstall) $5,000 - $14,000
Driveway sealing $250 - $700
Paver patio installation $3,500 - $11,000

The range driver is almost always base preparation. A CGI paver installation over existing compacted native soil costs less than one requiring 6-8 inches of imported Class 2 base over expansive clay. We quote the full scope in writing before work starts, including paver count by series, edge-restraint linear footage, joint-sand type, and disposal. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, that written price is fixed. No change proceeds without a signed change order, which is why our projects finish within a few percent of the original number.

Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation. The documented photo record we deliver at completion shows base depth, compaction passes, and final joint fill, so you have evidence of what was built.

An owner can safely check a few things: confirm whether the paver stamp reads CGI, measure the affected area in square feet, and photograph the edge-restraint condition. Do not attempt to relevel pavers yourself if the base has failed. The bedding sand must be screeded to a precise grade, and without a plate compactor and proper base material, the repair will settle again within a season.

Edge-restraint replacement involves cutting spikes into compacted aggregate with a sledge or gas-powered driver. It is not high-tension work like a garage spring, but it is tedious, and the restraint must be set to exact elevation or the border course will fail again. For permeable CGI Eco-Stone systems, the clean-stone base specification is strict; add the wrong aggregate and you clog the voids permanently.

We carry CGI-compatible stock on our trucks for most Long Beach repairs. Call (424) 567-7009 to schedule your free estimate. We will identify the series, measure the scope, and give you a written price before any work starts.
